Summary of Activities Since Town Meeting 2022

In May of 2022, Peterborough voters overwhelming supported moving the fire and ambulance station project forward by providing funding for design and engineering for the new facility to be located on Elm St., adjacent to the Peterborough Community Center.   Since that time, many important steps have been taken to develop a project that balances the program needs of the fire service with financial viability.  Some of those include:

·  Tours of existing fire stations throughout the state to develop ideas for project delivery, design considerations, and other ideas from communities that have gone through a similar process

·  Many meetings with local boards, committees, and community stakeholders to learn more about what is important to the community as the project moves forward

·  In the fall of 2022, the Select Board, on advise of the Budget Committee, approved a project budgetary goal of not-to-exceed 70% of total bonding capacity, which is currently estimated at approximately $12.1m.

·   The formation of a community-led building committee tasked with selecting professional service providers and working in partnership with town-staff to deliver a balanced project

·   The selection of a construction management company that specializes in pre-construction services, aimed at helping the town ensure its budgetary and programmatic goals are met every step of the way through design development

·   The selection of an architectural firm that specializes in municipal projects, with an emphasis on the need for services that include public input and direct engagement through design development

To provide a balanced project, the Building Committee specifically chose an architectural firm, SMP Architects of Concord, NH, based on their strategy for public input and engagement. The Building Committee also selected Harvey Construction based on their extensive experience working on public projects, and their strategy for pre-construction services aimed at developing a balanced project.

The public is encouraged to get involved in this project by attending upcoming visioning and listening sessions with the architects, the first to be held at the Peterborough Library on September 14th.  There will be two sessions that day: one at 3pm, and the second at 6pm.  A session will be recorded and posted online shortly after the listening session, allowing anyone that was not able to attend in person an opportunity to view the presentation and share their thoughts and ideas with the Building Committee and professional service team.
